Apply for the Jane Stock Excellence in Horticulture Scholarship
Jane’s first career was as an elementary school teacher, and she carried her passion for education throughout her professional and personal life. This passion made it a natural decision for the formation of the Foundation in her honour and to include an Annual Scholarship Award as part of its mandate.
The Jane Stock Horticulture Foundation offers several $1,000 scholarships for a qualifying BCLNA member, their child, grandchild, or employee, who is pursuing post-secondary education. While the foundation supports horticulture, Jane was an advocate, and number one cheerleader, for anyone advancing their interests with higher education. Therefore, this scholarship encompasses all areas of study.
Over the past 10 years, the Jane Stock Horticulture Foundation has received 171 applications for this annual award. Thirty-eight successful applicants have been awarded $1,000 each for a total of $38,000.
Criteria and Procedure
The committee dedicates time in reviewing each application, scoring each applicant in various categories including:
General presentation of the essay
Influence of horticulture on life, studies or career
Impact of studies on local/global community
Community involvement and work experience
The committee meets face to face to discuss the applications while analyzing the scores. The committee has been thrilled with the quality of the applications. It is evident that, ‘growing up horticulture’ provides an incredible foundation for the next generation.
